2002 Mercury Mountaineer, 4.6 V8, 35,700 miles. Took it to local dealership due to intermittent surging. They said no error codes on read out, so they installed updated computer codes. Seems to have cured the surging problem, but gas mileage dropped from about 16 mph to 13 mpg. Can I expect improvement as computer re-adjusts to my driving style/local conditions?

You might expect a little improvement as the adaptives learn but the changes they made to correct the surging was likely a richer mixture at certain times to correct the surging. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I would think that the computer should have 're-learned' much quicker, before you'd even notice a difference in fuel economy. Usually, about 20 miles of 'normal' driving is sufficient. So many things can affect fuel economy. Tire pressures, engine management, ect. I'd recommend that you mention this problem, and have them check exhaust gasses. That will tell you if it is running rich. The higher the CO2 level, the more efficient the engine is running. A CO2 level above 14% is good. 15% is great. Except for greenhouse gasses.
