Gas leak or float?

This has been a new issue and I'm finding it difficult to figure out on my own.
I own a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix GT and whenever I put in gasoline, the gauge only goes to a little bit above a quarter of a tank--no matter how much gas I'm putting in.
I'll be driving it around and the gauge goes down sometimes even past the empty mark and my low fuel light will come on. If I turn my car off and then back on, the low fuel light is off and sometimes the gauge will shoot all the way up past the full mark.
I've been keeping track of my mileage and how much gas I'm putting in, but when it lowers down to empty, I'm still biting my nails!
I smell gasoline when I get out of my car after driving, but that's not unusual or hasn't just started recently and the smell also doesn't linger if it's parked for a period of time.. I've also checked to see if any gasoline is leaking on the ground, but I haven't noticed anything.
Is this a gas leak or is something up with the float? Please help! It's driving me nuts!

Inaccurate gauge reading might be a connection or problem with the sender but the more important issue right now is to immediately find the source of smelling fuel. If it blows up you won't have to worry much about the gauge.........
