Hard start 98 Civic

I have a 1998 Honda Civic, 1.6L, Auto Trans, The car runs strong but sometimes dies. Sometimes after leaving it overnight and trying to start it in the morning it cranks over then seems like it isn't getting enough fuel and I have to press the gas and it sounds like a chainsaw shutting down. After trying to start it several times and pushing the gas pedal it will finally start and stay running. Sometimes it just shuts off after coming to a stop-last time at a toll booth! When this happened I took the air cleaner off and after going thru the starting time and time again- it started. The car has 150k on it. A tune up was completed in January with the usual -plugs, wires, air filter, dist cap and rotor, oil change. Any suggestions? Need help- this is my only mode of transportation! Just a note- I changed the battery two weeks ago.

Notes: * You have 150k and havent' changed the oil since January! Hmmm - how long has that bad habit been going on? * When was that last time you absolutely knew timing belt was good or new as in miles ago? There may be codes waiting with some information to help even if CEL isn't on and you could try that. Playing with gas pedal on EFI engines is just foot excercise unless floored to clear a flooded engine. Other wise it would normally just confuse the controls, T

Just for the sake of saying- no, I change the oil every 3000k or three months (whichever comes first) and pressing the gas does seem to clear out the "flooded" engine. I don't believe the timing belt has ever been changed- just got this car two months ago but it was owned by a friend and has the docs for the service. I did a re-gap on the plugs (they looked fine), changed the fuel filter, cap and rotor replaced, and cleaned the throttle body. If this doesn't work I will look further! thanks for the input.

A Honda with 150K and the original timing belt? Do you have any idea what risk your taking? My last civic, the timing belt was never replaced and it had over 200k on it! Again, only had this car for a couple months before it was stolen. A Honda will last forever if you take care of it. I normally replace a timing belt at 90k just to be safe. Just haven't done it to this car yet.

I agree. Had good luck with the Honda line- minus the theft!
