Hard start when cold Sign In

When trying to start vehicle in the mornings, after sitting for several hours, the vehicle will turn over like it is trying to start but takes many times to get it started. Once it is started, and it is warm, it will run fine for the day. Check engine light is not on and no other warning lights are flashing. The vehicle has 169,000 miles on it. It is a 1989 Mercedes Benz CE. It is a 6 cylinder.

Re: Hard start when cold Sign In

I see nobody has been by yet for ideas so I'll give this a shot. Benz and some others can be their own bird so personally never dug too far into them just because of expense of info and tools when most just went to dealer service for them with abundant info and parts (OE) at the ready fast or faster.

OK - By your description it isn't delivering more fuel for cold starts like a choke would even fuel injected has ways to do that same function and shut down gradually as it warms up when not needed.

A quick look shows this does use a coolant temp sensor (not the same as one for a gauge on dash) that would tell it that it's cold and HOW cold.

Could be wrong but should look like this..........

Can only be 'general' for this car so suggest just make sure it's plugged in (should be near thermostat area) and wires look good. Be careful especially with these cars not to damage plug connections just checking anything especially at some age.

The concept is this changes ohms at given temps and engine management controls take that info on how much fuel to deliver even pre OBDII vehicle. Benz could do this or route this all differently than the masses of other vehicles.

Might do you well to just get a diagnosis and decide if you want to take it on or not,

Another suggestion is to connect up a fuel pressure gauge and watch what fuel pressure is doing when you have the hard start. Also see if the fuel pressure bleed down rate is excessive.
