Help with alarm I don't have

Hi. I have a: 99 Mercury Cougar 6cylinder I am the second owner and the car never had an alarm that I knew of, and everything was fine. Then one day I went out and unlocked my driver's side door and the car started honking at me. I didn't know what to do, it wouldn't stop even when I started the car. I finally figured out the only way to turn it off was to unlock the passenger side door. So now I have to do that every time. I also realized this happens when I unlock the trunk too. I imagine there must be some kind of sensor in the locks or in the key. Does anyone know for sure or what I can do to mend this. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I know virtually nothing about alarm systems, so hopefully someone else will jump in here...Do you have the key fob that came with the keys when the car was new? Have you tried a different key? My understanding is that Ford puts the 'chip' in the key under the black plastic/rubber part on the key, itself. It must 'match' the transponder in the doors and the ignition. Could be wrong. If you don't have the key fob, you might contact your local Ford dealer and see if they can order one for you. Loren SW Washington
