Hissing noise when 1996 Honda Civic drives Sign In

Hi everyone

I have a 1996 Honda civic coupe DX with 176k miles

I know the front right passenger axle has to be replaced. I'm just hearing a new hissing noise that I've never heard before.

I have a video. Just not sure how to upload it.
I put it on YouTube and you can hear the noise when you listen to it....http://youtu.be/hozDHlglAeY

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

That is a strange noise. It almost sounds like a vacuum leak because in the video is appears the noise is there when your coasting and goes away on accel. Can you hear this noise when the vehicle isn't moving with the engine idling?

The weird thing is I don't hear it anymore !!! I drove later that night and it went away completely. I nearly had a heart attack.

I do think there is a vacuum leak though, because when I put the air or heat on when the car is cold it makes this screeching noise. I kinda thought it was the belt, but I'm starting to notice the loud screeching is when the car is cold and when the Heat is on... Does that sound like a vacuum leak ?

If you have the ac button turned on or the mode selected for defrost and that noise happens, you could have a problem with the compressor or maybe the belt that drives it.

Could also be the thermal expansion valve making a funky noise. The expansion valve is located inside the chamber box behind the dash on the passenger's side. It could making hissing noises, but would only do that when he ac compressor is running or right after the compressor turns off.

The HVAC system on that one isn't controlled by vacuum, but that doesn't mean you could be hearing something under the hood.

The only way to really determine what is going on is to attempt to pinpoint the location of the noise. If it comes back, probably wouldn't hurt to have your mechanic check it out.

Okay I will definitely look into it. It's very frustrating and embarrassing when you have that very loud noise coming from your car as you try to heat it up early in the morning. But that was definitely a strange noise. Thank you so much.
