Hot Battery - Help

2006 Ford Expedition
Our Ford wouldn't start the other day, seemed like dead battery. We charged it and seemed fine. Next morning same thing. I figured with original battery and the cold temps, it was probably a bad battery.
I took it to get changed today, and it tested fine. Checker Auto Parts also said the alternator seemed to be fine. However, we found that the battery is very hot. The water is boiling I brought the car home and after an hour or so, still seemed very hot. I've taken the negative cable off, and waiting now.
The cables/terminals were clean.
Any thoughts on what could cause the batter to get that hot. Calling the dealer in the morning.

Normally an overcharging condition will cause a battery to overheat or if the battery has a shorted cell that can cause it to get warm & smell like rotten eggs....
It sounds like you are doing the right thing by taking it in......The parts stores are good for checking batteries, pulling codes and bench testing alternators once it comes down to having to do on vehicle testing its better to take it in to a shop.....

Thanks for the reply. I didn't ever smell anything. My guess is that I wasn't close enough, as it was outside and cool, and a slight breeze. I did just go out and check again. It's still very warm. I wouldn't say it's as hot as it was. The negative cable has been disconnected for about 3 hours, and the engine it quite cool. Not sure what that tells me. I just hope whatever it is, it's not expensive. As soon as I get that taken care of in the morning, I'm off to get new tires.

In the morning the batter was finally cold. I hooked up the negative cable and as I predicted the car wouldn't start. I took it into Ford. They felt it was the battery and replaced it for me. It's now getting tires at another location. I'll see in a few days if that does the trick for me.

Was the car restarting on it's own the night before when it was parked?
