Idle Motor Sign In

SmileHi, 92 eldo touring coupe, 4.9L, over 200,000 mi. the Engine will not hold an idle when starting up, and has stalled a couple of times letting off the gas to break for a red light. Mechanic said to replace the idle motor which sets up top on the engine. The swap out looks routine. Is there anything I should look out for this seemingly simple repair ?

It's pretty much a wax on wax off , R & R job . Before doing the swap out try this . The main ground from the battery attaches on block just in front of starter . It has been known to loosen and cause all sorts of problems. Take off , clean area , tighten stud and reinstall cable tightly.

The battery cables are original so were talking 18yr's old. Car starts right up and 4.9L runs as one mod. described like butter. I plan on replacing some things like struts, plugs & wires, should I just go ahead and put new battery cables considering age ? What do you think about the newer style spark plugs - like Bosch platinum +4 with the surface air gap nickel-yttrium electrodes? lastly, thinking about going with regular struts not the air adjustable for cost reasons. P.S. this is a very helpfull forum my neighbor was struging yesterday trying to get a serpentine belt back on after changing out a pulley. I told him to join the forum to get help. Helping others is a blessing. Thank you. 92 Eldo-59yrs old and the old dog can still hunt.

new cables cant hurt , but check the ground stud first . it wont cause starting problems but will screw with the ECM . I have a neighbor with same eng ,and it runs fine on plain ol AC DELCO plugs . unless you just want to spend the bucks so u can say u got fancy plugs.

Comment on funky plugs:

I don't buy the multi electrode bull. Dang spark is going to pick just one so it gives you three to foul up. Sounds like a neat idea but truth is most OE plugs are usually the best bet. I really believe that if they were a real advantage the car makers would use them as OE equipment,

Cool well OK! Got some strong opinions on plug issue that's good. OEM plugs last a long time was wondering if claim of better HP/performance was for real ? What do you guys think about air intake system and filter? there are a couple out there K&N and others. whats your experience with claim of better HP and mileage. arket ensive

I certainly don't want to stifle new ideas but tons of them don't hold water. Back to the 1960's there was this cool product that claimed to rebuild your engine with pellets dropped down a carburetor - with testimonials of course!

Another oil additive so slippery you could run without oil for weeks with no ill effectsCrazy Love that one as hydraulic lifters wouldn't lift! Somehow they were unchallenged on that TMK??

The basics of electricity is to pick the path of least resistance so with the spark plug thing it's just going to pick the easiest one and the others are just in the way. There are ignition systems designed to fire twice - they use two spark plugs.

Some OE engines came with two electrodes and I'd stay with OE if they did that. My guess is they had an "indexing" issue with an engine lacking the "swirl" effect of the fuel/air mix and that solved it.

The air induction tricks may have some credence - again if so good why would a manufacturer not do that first to get more power, mpg, less emissions etc., instead of going out of biz over the costs of engineering a dang engine?

What I'm afraid of is playing with something non OE could cause you troubles that are difficult later to figure out! They (companies that make the various products) kinda don't put things like that in BOLD print.

When you are trying to cover a problem with some last ditch effort or junk a vehicle try what you want, otherwise unless there's a widespread known problem that can be solved it's probably not going to be fixed or improved with funky products,
