1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L Unsure on mileage. Jeep is at the mechanic shop because it would not start. It had a split wire in the wiring harness. It has a new header, ignition coil, cps, distributor, fuel injectors, computer, and many other parts. Timing was off, but is now set. The mechanic is able to get it started only with the #1 spark plug out. Any ideas?

Doesn't make much sense. Has he done a compression test yet?

I'd also look for something that may be causing crossfires like the firing order or cracked distributor cap. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Check for plugged exhaust system or cat? Maybe taking the plug out allows the exhaust gasses to pass through #1 exhaust valve. (WAG) Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

We bought it not running, the previous owner said he thought that it was a fuel problem. After having someone take a look at it, they discovered the ECU was not communicating to the car. Took it to the dealership to have it "flashed", since previous owner said he replaced it. They said it was not able to be flashed because it was bad. They replaced the Crank Sensor, and Distributor, and new ECU. It was running, but had a terrible exhaust leak. Didn't drive it because the leak was horrible. Got the header replaced, now it won't start again. Found wiring harness to have some wires melted together. Replaced wiring harness. Replaced the fuel injectors, new plugs, wires, ignition coil, new battery, and another Crank Sensor. Still nothing. Someone suggested the timing may have been thrown off. Had a new timing chain/belt put on it. Still nothing. Took it into the mechanic shop and found a wire in the wiring harness was not connected, but still nothing, ran a new ground (which he said helped).

Most likely that melted wiring is what ruined the first computer and may have done it again. Computers don't just die of old age, they are killed by something.

Final report is a clogged catalytic converter. Unplugged o2 sensor and it starts with # 1 plug in.
