Hello! I have a few questions I'm hoping I can get answered. Let me start by saying I am not a mechanic, I know very little about cars, and I am on a TIGHT budget. I own a 1998 Ford Ecsort. A terrible little car. Anyways, it's making a nasty noise everytime I turn right. I had a friend of mine look at it, who at least has some knowledge. He believes it is the drivers side CV joint that needs to be replaced. My questions are as follows: Would I be able to fix this by myself, if I buy the all the parts (I do have the Haynes repair manual)? Do I need just the joint, or is there a kit that includes the boots? What would this cost me if I took it to a repair shop? Is this even worth fixing, or should I junk the car and get something else? Please be nice in your responses, I'm new at this. I would take it to get an estimate, but I am scared to drive it because I won't be able to afford to tow it and fix it all at once. I understand that it may not even be the CV joint, but I'm looking for any help I can get. I do have a ride to/from work, so I have time to fix it, or save up for the shop. Any opinions would be great, and I will do my best to answer any questions. Thanks for your time.

To tell you the truth I think you’ll be farther ahead having a shop do this repair for you. By the time you would purchase all the equipment and tools you need to do the job properly and safely it won’t sound all that expensive to have it done. There are complete rebuilt shafts available now for around a hundred bucks that’s about half the price of buying a new CV joint and boot. The shop shouldn’t charge you any more then an hour to an hour and half at the most to install it. Dan Canadian "EH"

I totally agree with Dan - again! The shop may make some bucks but unless you want to do this all the time you would lose for the tools and equipment required. Even at full price a "half shaft" is NOT that expensive - sold as rebuilts. Some places that specialize in alignments can both replace the part and get you a proper alignment at the same visit. In the long run if that's what you need it will be a bargain,

Alright, thanks guys. I found a buddy that can haul the car for me, so I'm going to get some estimates. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again, I'm feeling better about it already. Josh - Ohio, US
