Maybe engine trouble

2005 Chevrolet Venture 3.4L about 195,000kms My van has started making this odd sound this week. It starts with no trouble, as it idles it is ok, but when we start to drive, as it accelerates it make a whining sound. Colin says it sounds like some kind of electric motorand to me it sounds like a really loud motorbike engine. We can hear it sitting in the car driving but standing outside the van as it passes we hear nothing. Any ideas? It might be an engine trouble but we have had a lot of problems with the abs system. Not sure if one has anything to do with the other.

Where does the sound appear like it is coming from? Does it make this noise only on acceleration? If it is making this noise while cruising, put the transmission into neutral and see if the noise is still there. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

The sound seems to be coming from the front, more toward the passenger side. I can feel a bit of vibrsation under the floor on the passenger side. Could this be from a suck caliper or piston? Just checked the rotor and there are grooves cut into it.

Noises are a pill on the web to describe and pin down but we get some. Just question for now, is this speed related or engine load and RPM related? Can it make this noise sitting still? A Bad brake is more apt to grind or some can squeal/squeak. Brakes will (if that) make problems or noises that would change with speed. Never heard the description of one sounding like a motorcycle engine. If caliper was frozen up you could hoist that wheel while in neutral and it should be free to turn. If hard to turn let us know, T

I took it to a garage today and the hub assembly needs to be replaced.

Fot some reason I found this to be a common problem on newer front wheel drive vehicles. I just did one last week on a dodge minivan. Glad you found your problem! -------------------------------------------------------- Your only as good as your tools!
