I have a 93 mercury tracer 1.9L with 157000 miles on it. I put a new battery in and tested it shows 700cca. The starter engages but cannot turn the engine over. Oil level and consistancy and color all look good. What could cause this?

What do you mean by "the starter engages but won't turn the motor over" ?

you can hear the solinoid kick in like it locks up the gears to start turning the motor over but then does nothing. IF you wait a few mins and try again it will turn over but slowly

Ok. If you are just hearing a "click" you could be looking at a connection or cable issue. Make sure the both terminals are clean & tight and the cables don't look "swollen". After that you're probably going to have to do a voltage drop test on the cables to make sure there isn't excess resistance in the circuit............Also maybe take the battery back to where you got it & have them double check it..... Wouldn't be the 1st time I've seen a bad battery right off the shelve.....

would it be easier and close to the same money to replace the cables from battery to the starter without testing. Or would the test help reveal other issues?

The test would revel if the part is the problem or not......... If you have the equipment it's alway cheaper to test than throw parts, running the test cost nothing but time...... If you are a good guesser, then it's easier & faster to throw parts than test......

That does make it a little tougher..... If you're not going to use the tools than its a waste to spend $$ on them..... The diag will probably be the cheaper route....... for that in the range of $20 - $40. If it's something you can do yourself then you not out too much....... Even as much as I dislike seein em rolll out after the diag it's all good..... But definately do the stuff you can 1st..... clean the cables & if one is obviouly swollen with corrosion.....replace it.....

Yea....It sounds like a connection problem. One other thing you can try is try is to take the neg cable off where it attaches to the block and clean that area. Maybe someone else has idea I've overlooked. There's a few thing it could be but without a voltmeter it's tough to check out.........

Once you eliminate all connection issues, if you still have the problem, you may be looking at a bad starter. It will basically give you the same symptoms. You could try tapping on it while someone else tries to start it. If it responds to that, then blame the starter. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
