My 2004 Mazda 6 (about 90,000 miles) was just in the shop for stalling (it was stalling multiple times in one driving session. It would stall both when I was moving and when I was stopped at a red light or stop sign and as a side not when the car stalls the check engine light and battery light come on but once I shut off my car and restart it both lights go out). The mechanics replace spark plugs, the alternator and cleaned the throttle bore. However, when I got it back I had to put gas in my car. When I went to start my car, it started up but immediately stalled. Again the check engine light and battery light came on but once i shut the car off and restarted it they went out. I shut it off and restarted it with no trouble. I was also able to drive it home about 5-10 minutes away with no further stalling. Anyone out there who knows about cars and such, can you please help me try and find out what is causing this!! P.S. My electronic key pad to unlock and lock my car does not work, could this be part of the problem??

Does it start back up right after it stalls out? Which engine do you have? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Your right it is a 4 cylinder (2.3L) To be frank with you, the problem your having is going to be difficult to diagnose because what ever is causing the engine to stall is happening so fast that the only way to catch it is by using some high tech equipment. If it was a stall and no start for an extended period of time, it would be easier to figure out. Unless the tech sees something visually wrong that could cause the stalling, the general course of action is to check for any stored codes in all modules of the vehicle. This will tell you if there are any modules storing codes related to the stall, such as comm codes. If there are no codes and everything is communicating as it should, then it comes down to monitoring engine computer inputs (cam/crank signals), outputs ( ignition coil and fuel injector control), and power and ground supply to those items. Since the problem occurs fast, the inputs and power/ground circuits are going to need to be monitored with a digital storage oscilloscope. The scope can be recording these signals when the engine stalls out. Then the recorded signals can be replayed and analyzed to see what glitches or goes away right before the stall. Since these computers and sensors are sending these fast signals, problems can occur very fast when something goes wrong requiring fast diagnostic equipment to catch the problem. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
