My Car Is Dead

Hi, My name is Patrick. I have a 1979 Playmouth Volare Premier. It has a 318 2bbl engine. When I bought the car it ran. Then it got harder to start. Finally it didnt have any power. My wife and I tried to jump start it and the alternator started smoking. So i took the alternator and the battery to Advance. They checked both and said neither were any good. The gentleman also recommended that I buy a voltage regulator. So I bought all three parts, went home and installed them. At first I didnt even get the door open buzz. Waited 5 minutes and then I got the door buzz but no power to the engine. i waited 5 more minutes and then I got power to the engine but not enuff to turn over. I waited 5 more minutes and bam, car starts, but it was idling really fast in park and neutral. If I stepped on the brakes too hard the engines started sputtering, which it di before it died on me the first time. So, I let it sit for a day and a half and we are back to no power at all. Could it be wiring? another part is bad? Could the charge be arcing from the alternator to the engine? The bolt head that holds the alternator in does look close to the engine, approximately 1 and a half inches? I hope that you can help me with this.

Well, when you hook up the battery, there shouldn't be any waiting period before you have power. I would probably be looking at the battery cables ( both ends, both cables) to make sure all the connections are clean & secure to see if that helps.
