Mystery Ford problem! Sign In

I have a 1997 Ford Fiesta Fusion with 1.25 Zetec engine. Last year it started hiccoughing, it would pull back for a second while the revs would plummet, then would pick back up and revs back to normal. It was annoying but not a major problem until it cut out altogether at high speed and I had to pull over to the side and call the RAC. They said it was my mass air flow sensor, so I changed this, and all was fine for a while, then started again. Once I'd broken down again they said my crank coil was magnetised, and I got a new one of these. Problem continued, and I then tried changing the fuel filter but the problem continued. I've also cleaned the spark plugs.

Two mechanics (who haven't fully looked at it) say it could be so many things I might as well scrap it, but I feel it could be something simple like an air leak etc. I have also noticed that my oil was very low (below min) when I thought it wasn't. I topped it up then looked again in the morning and it was very low again, but with no oil on ground. So don't know how much this could be linked. Also my heater started, about the same time, only blowing hot air, so again don't know if this is related.

I'd rather not scrap my car, but due to it's age/cost, I don't want to keep spending money on bits.
I realise noone can fully diagnose, but any ideas as to cheap/free things I can try out on it? Could it just be that the oil was too low?
Thanks for reading.
