I have a 2002 Chevy Cavalier that has been a wonderful car except for one problem. I was told my thermostat was going out so I had it replaced with a factory one about 6 years ago. Ever since that replacement my car does not held temperature (above 100 degrees) when I am driving over the speed of 55 mph on days under 60 degrees. This problems occurs no matter if the car is warmed for hours or not. Over the past 6 years I have had the thermostat replaced with factory and after market parts at every degree rating, I have replaced the gasket every time the thermostat is replaced, replaced the thermostat housing and bolts, have spent 6 hours after each replacement making sure all the air out of the coolant lines and checked the lines for leaks, too much or little amount of liquid. Most mechanics swear it is the thermostat and I am ready for new ideas. I have replaced that thermostat in excess of 15 times and I am tired of hearing that is the only possible problem. I just want my car back to how it when I bought it.

What is the actual temperature at the engine coolant temperature sensor? Best thing to use is a laser thermometer. Does the heater blow out hot air? Could be a gauge problem. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

The heater blows out cool air, that is the worst part. I have never had anyone suggest the ECT sensor (until now, I did not know about this part) so I will have to test that today. Thanks for the new direction.

If the heater isn't blowing hot, maybe the temperature is too low, core is plugged up, or air is trapped somewhere. Are the heater hoses hot? Which engine 2.2L? DOHC or OHV pushrod engine? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I have not checked the temp but all the componets around the engine heat up but I am unsure if it is enough. I will check the heater hoses. I have the 2.2L OHV.

15 Thermostats! Cold heat. That could be heater core as DS suggested but just get a laser or infrared thermo as this shouldn't be rocket science to know actual temps where they are. They are not that expensive for basic ones and plain handy. My coffee just checked at 99.5F so have to go warm it up T
