I drive a 1997 Ford Contour.
It is a little 4 banger engine with 140,000 miles on it.
Recently it has been failing its state inspection. The code that it provides is:
P0171 - Bank 1 System too lean.

I've been given a diagnosis of everything from O2 sensor to a vacuum seal leak.

If ANYONE knows what could be causing the problem and can give me a sure-fire solution, I would greatly appreciate it. I am tired of pouring money into this vehicle for it to NOT fix the problem.

lean condition in bank 1 means the O2 sensor in bank 1 is detecting a lean condition (too much oxygen)

check/clean your MAF sensor.
check for any vaccuum leaks.

It could be caused b any vacuum leak on the engine laso. Make sure all the hoses and gaskets are in good shape and do not leak.
