Hey guys,
I recently put a new starter, alternator, and battery in my car. The car will push start no problem, but I cant get the engine to turn over using the key. I heard it could be the ignition switch but I also heard that if that was the case then the car wouldn't push start. Any ideas? Suggestions? If I'm leaving any information out please let me know. Any help would be appreciated. Oh, its a 2002 Cavalier 2.2L 105k miles. I also checked the connections to the battery and starter. When the key is in the car the interior lights and headlights work just fine and the car isnt making any noise when I turn the key (I cant hear the starter clicking or anything). After replacing the clutch, the starter went bad and I ended up replacing the alternator and battery trying to troubleshoot (you cant return electrical parts so I figured I might as well use them). The car ran no problem for about a week, I went to start it last night and nothing, I got the battery checked and it was fine - the only thing I can really think of is the starter going bad again but I have doubts because its brand new.

Check your battery connections, make sure they are clean and tight. Check starter cable, make sure it looks good the entire length. Make sure you didnt miss a ground that bolts to the block or bellhousing (also make sure that the grounds are clean and tight). If you have a test light, make sure that you are getting power to the trigger wire on starter with key turned to start position.

The only thing I couldnt check was the trigger wire. Everything else is pretty tight and secure. Nothing is loose under the hood that I could see. The vehicle was running fine after I had all the newer components put in - it just randomly stopped a week later. How possible is it that a new starter would take a crap after a week? and if it possible to check it without taking it off the car?

new = never ever worked

Need to check that trigger wire with test light and verify that you are getting power on key start. Also verify that you are getting power on big- battery positive to starter cable- at starter.

Defiantly not an expert here but could it be a problem with a switch that tells if the clutch is in? I know manual transmission cars I had needed the clutch pressed before it would turn over the engine.

Need to do suggested tests or its just guessing. Be extremely careful when doing so. you dont want the engine to start and run you over. Put shifter in neutral, set park brake, recommend disabling the engine for this test.

As GC has said you'll need to test if there's power to the "S" terminal of the starter solenoid, when the ignition is in the start position.
A simple test light that can be bought for 5-10 bucks is all you'll need at this point to check this. After telling us yes or no to having power, we could go on to things like below.
Back in 02 the Cavaliers and Sunfires had an issue with the starting circuit. GM address this issue by adding an extra relay between the ignition switch and the starter solenoid.
This relay was usually located above the starter motor attach to rad shroud. If the patch connections were not sealed properly; after some time these connections would rot away.

Figured out the problem. . After going through the tests and trouble shooting it was a faulty starter. . I got it replaced and the car is fine. Thanks for the help
