Need to remove lock cylinder. Need help. Sign In

We have a 1988 Honda Civic. The ignition key is stuck in the lock cylinder and we cannot remove it. I need to remove the lock cylinder so that I can park the car for a few days (without worrying about it getting stolen). I can buy a replacement lock cylinder in about a week. But in the meantime, I need to remove the one that is in the car so that I can park the car safely.

How should I remove the lock cylinder? There are two screws in the under side of the steering column. These two screws are the only screws I can find. Should I remove those two screws, and then remove the plastic that houses the steering column? Then, will it become obvious what the next step is to remove the lock cylinder?

I hope that I have provided enough information regarding my problem and the questions that I have. If, not I will provide more info as needed.

Thanks for your help.

1984-91 Models

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Remove the steering wheel and the steering column covers.

  3. Disconnect the ignition switch connector.

  4. Center punch each of the two shear bolts and drill their heads off with a suitable drill bit.

Do not damage the switch body when removing the shear bolt heads.

  1. Remove the shear bolts from the switch body and remove the switch.

To install:

  1. Install the new ignition switch without the key inserted.

  2. Loosely tighten the new shear bolts.

Make sure the projection on the ignition switch is aligned with the hole in the steering column.

  1. Insert the ignition key and check for proper operation of the steering wheel lock and that the ignition key turns freely.

  2. Tighten the shear bolts until the hex heads twist off.

Sorry for only limited know how for this Honda. You may need to remove steering wheel and a puller for that. If you can conceal that the key is there and lock the car and disable engine - even unhook battery or whatever is easy for you temporarily would secure the car. A locksmith just might be able to get that key out for you quickly and be worth a try since you can still drive it,
