New tires TOO responsive, steering too sensitive Sign In

Hi guys,

I just got a new set of 4 Michelin Harmony tires on my 2001 Chevy Prizm yesterday. Overall I like the tires for easier turns and parking but steering in a straight line has become a chore. If I move the steering wheel like half an inch to the left or right my car will immediately veer over that direction. My steering is REALLY sensitive now.

I checked all the tires pressure thinking they had too much air and they are all at 30 psi so they are ok. I am afraid that when the roads get icy/snowy this is going to be a problem.

Any advice or comments really appreciated for what I can do or if I just need to get used to this. Thanks guys.

Four new tires should be a total improvement on the character of the car. You may be in shock that it's behaving as intended! New tires is a great time to get a high quality alignment and just maybe there is something wrong, worn that now does make it feel less in control and the old tires didn't allow you to know it.

The tires also should be of the recommended size for the car or all bets are off,

Thats true. The car may need an alignment. A car that is riding on the outside edge of the tires, will make a car feel like it's on rails when it comes to steering. If it is an alignment problem, don't wait too long to get an alignment. If you do the tires will start wearing unevenly. Once this happens, they will not wear evenly again. I hope this helps.
