Wow, been thru a lot, changed the starter, changed the battery starer cable, seemed to fix it, but old problem is back,
seems electrical, turn the key on, all lights go out, step on the brake, all lights go out, tried staring in neutral, wiggled the automatic shift handle, sometimes, all things are go,
but then some days, lights are on, power is there turn the key, and all is dead...
any ideas?
thanks

How about the battery? Have you had it tested?

Test it, charged and clean all cable connections. Replace if older or bad test results,

Got a brand new battery, cables are new too, car doing the same thing, if I put it in neutral, wait for a while, and then it will not "short out" and the car will start,
I had read something about the anti theft device shorting out
and something about the horn shorting out the ignition switch / anti theft device in this model.
any thoughts before I dive into the steering column?
also something about switching the lights on and off three times resets the anti theft device as I do not have the controller....

If the alarm is going off and enabling the inhibiter relay, that will disable cranking of the engine. The horn and lights should be flashing when the alarm is going off though. You can disable the alarm by using the key to unlock the driver's door if it is going off. Turning the lights on and off doesn't do anything for the alarm system.

You could be having a neutral safety switch issue, if you can start it in neutral, but not park. Your going to have to chase down the culprit in the starter circuit when it is acting up. You'll need a test light/volt meter and schematic to test the circuit.

Thanks for the reply
I took the steering column cover off and the problem stopped,
so it seems as it is / was something there,
will test when I get the volt meter to test the circuit
thanks

Nope that did not fix it, worked for a while, then it broke down again, seems to be electrical.
seems something to do with the AntiTheft device.
any thoughts?

Try disconnecting the battery negative cable and stepping on the break pedal for 30 seconds and reconnect the negative terminal. Do you have a aftermarket anti-theft system/immobilizer?.

If it starts every time after you reconnect the battery would give a strong indication to a module fault.. if it's doesn't it may still be a module or wiring also.

IT was the power source from the battery to the fuse / relay box near the battery, we hard wired it for now, will do a full fix on Monday.
thanks again

Very bad idea to hardwire it.. especially if there is a electrical problem it could cause a fire.

Okay, but the clip part is no longer available, even from Nissan,
maybe a junk yard? then it will be just what it is already an old electrical part...
I could send a pic of the part... would that help.
Unsure

Okay, it is the wiring "harness" that goes from the plus side of the battery to a fuse block. the harness cannot be purchased so I will have to make one up, it has two parallel wires that slide slide clip together, and end up at the same terminal. so it appears that it "splits the load" and sends it thru some "fuse cross link" (maybe I have the wrong term here) wire that will protect the fuse block / fuses from too much current overload, I just have to make one of these up,
will get parts at Napa today...
will keep you posted as to progress, thanks, thanks for the help.

Never say never but fusable link wire should be colored for the amps it should tolerate. Don't over do it as the idea of course is to blow before burning the thing up in flames,

Yes, I understand, what is hard to find is the "slide" connectors, and why are there two wires that end up in the same terminal, to split the amps?

Are you just looking for a two wire male/female plug? Is yours any good by continuity? You could just splice in (do that right if you go there - soldered, shrink tubing over splice) and put in the section of wire that burned out.

You said you had a NAPA available so things should be available for all that.

Doesn't matter but what Island are you on? Spent a lot of time in HI, Oahu, Molokai and Lanai where at the time you would be SOL for anything,

Because they are independent fuses that power separate circuits.
