89 volvo wgn 240 DL. I have no idea how many miles are on it, odometer broke 10 yrs ago. The no power problem came on suddenly, no slow increase. Tried a different air mass meter, new plugs cap rotor wires. Main pump also changed along with filter.

? Check valve timing. !! Is oil low or warning light not operating? Check lights if only a light turn key to run without starting it should show warning or oil pressure below spec totally. SERIOUS issue not oil level alone that's oi PRESSURE lacking. That would cause loss of power and show as even low compression as would a sudden exhaust restriction if running at all you can plain old vacuum test for that. Find and "T" in and vacuum gauge to "Actual Manifold Vacuum" should read the same at idle and again held at about 2,000 RPMs. If not reasons include serious rust flaking inside exhaust broke loose clog convert(s) even a muffler. Super rare is exhaust pipe made of two sheets of metal an inside layer folds unseen from outside would have to be some aftermarket pipe they quit making those ages before '89. The clue for you is it was ''sudden" that's what I'd be chasing down, T (Edit for "Vacuum Test below" and add top line warning) Manifold vacuum test: At idle tap into actual manifold vacuum below any throttle plate allow item it runs to operate is why to "T" one in. Now you can watch for how many Hg (inches of mercury) should read about 18 or close. If not see if needle/gauge is fluctuating or floating around say so. If that's good hold at 2,000 as said it should read the same as at idle even in not exactly 18 close though will drop and spike if revved up is normal. I could expound more and will but that's very telling for a cheap and easy test without wild tools. * Where to get one you may ask: The hand help pistol pump also works as a gauge just don't pump it for this no need to go buy anything too costly, got it?

OK, that's one test keep testing away. I'm trying to figure out what can be "sudden" like that should be able to pin that down exhaust isn't ruled totally out yet there's more from engine to cat/conv too. That's why for this, now an old car (no problem on it's own) just begin ruling things in or out. The plain part tossing game isn't the best answer it's much better to KNOW you found out what and why. To me now and for ages. New parts are a question right away just ads chances the old stuff was better or not the problem now add a new one while hunting for the real reason, Tom
