No Start 99 Taurus Sign In

Just purchased 99 Taurus 24vDohc. Seller stated, several months ago vehicle just started shutting off as he was driving the car. Now the car wont even start. When you turn it over it sounds and feels like it wants to start but just wont. Seller stated a mechanic told him the "brain" was starting to go bad. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated before I go buy an new computer for this thing.

Jeff, you really have to start with basics. Are/were any codes showing? You have to know if there is any spark, fuel and air. You really have to have a start point. Any one will disable any gasoline; engine. Have to start somewhere, regardless what the previous owner said.

Like CH said, 1st you need to find out what you are missing. Spark or fuel? You may also want to get the codes pulled.

I saw a similar problem with an identical car. If you're not getting spark, look at the crank sensor. Take off the right front wheel and inner fenderwell. Remove the serpentine belt too. The alternator will have to be swung back but not removed. There is one bolt holding in the crank position sensor. Its an 8 or 10mm socket as I recall. But look very closely at the connection. Cut the sheath protecting the wires up a few inches and see if you can see copper. Sometimes the insulation deteriorates and sloughs off, and will cause the crank signal to either not reach the PCM or be so garbled it can't be interpreted. Also, when cranking and it won't start look at the tach. If its not keeping pace with the actual speed of the engine or has no reading at all thats a big sign of crank sensor issues. Its not an expensive part, but look at the wires before you replace it. I ended up going out in a downpour to rescue a customer's car that I put a crank sensor in because I couldn't see the damaged wires in the sheath that covered them. Make sure to tape it up when you're done the protect the wires.
