Old Miata went in the ditch Sign In

Hello - I hope someone can advise us how to restore my friend's car which has sat in muddy water up to the wheel wells for 2 hours this morning. The water was up to the tops of the wheel wells and did get inside the car so the seats are wet, as well as the floorboards/carpets. The engine was also half-immersed. The car has now been towed out of the ditch to the impound lot, but we hope to get it back asap to start drying it out.

It's a '91 Miata with 108,000 miles on it, so not worth spending a lot of money on, but it is in good shape, and runs great so we are willing to put in time and effort on it. As far as we could tell after the tow truck hauled it out, there is no body damage other than some scratches. It's possible there is damage to the undercarriage or muffler/tailpipe, couldn't tell.

Any advice would be much appreciated

It would really depend on how much of the electronics got wet. If you got modules & harnesses under water it may get expensive and it's quick possible you'll be chasing electrical ghosts for the rest of the cars life. You may get it going but once the water starts corroding the terminals & connectors it could get very frustrating....

If you are going to do this, it needs to be done quickly. All harnesses & connecters that got wet are going to have to be opened up, dried & cleaned. Wet modules are going to need to be replaced...........

The interior is going to need to be replaced as well but electrical & mechanical take priority..............
