I have a remanufactured 5.7 that is in perfect running condition. It was recently wrecked. Someone I know had a 96 that was stolen and the engine and transmission removed. Is it possible to put my 5.7 in the 96 and if so how difficult.

You're not too clear on what this engine came out of. '96 what? Did it come out of another pickup? Did they both have the same transmission type. Does the 8th digit of the VIN# match for both vehicles? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I know it is a 5.7 Vortec. I will have to check on the VIN and the exact type of transmission.

I just meant manual vs auto on the trans question. It may or may not make a difference. The VIN code is the important thing.

If the VIN matches, you should be OK. I think you'll be looking for an "R" code.

Near sure with Hammer that the "R" code Vortec is identical. Trans, count pan bolts. Should be 16 or 17 bolt for the 4L60E and 4L80E respectively. The 16 bolt (memory challenged now) is more square and 17 bolt should have a torx headed drain plug - likely........ T

Which auto trans shouldn't matter as long as you are using the computer system that came with that trans package.

The 8th letter is R. I take it that you are telling me that I am good. What do I need to check on the transmission? Thanks

That is the case with both vehicles. Just to recap and make sure before I buy this truck I have a 90 Chevy 1500 with 8th digit R in VIN. New motor recently wrecked and totaled. Three speed auto transmission with overdrive. Wanting to purchase a 96 Silverado 1500 recently stolen with motor and transmssion removed. Otherwise in beautiful condition. Just wanted to know if I may face any problems putting motor into new truck. Thanks

Cylinder heads and intake are different between engines. Your probably missing most of the CPI injection and ignition system, so you have to find that. If the computer is missing or harness is missing that makes it even more difficult and expensive. The 96 had an electronic transmission 4L60E or 4L80E and the old truck has a 700R4. It would be cheaper and less painful to buy a good used truck with a decent engine and transmission already in it. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

? If you have both that's a great advantage. My guess is a stolen engine/trans wasn't a real neat and tidy job so you would hopefully have plugs connectors, wiring things and stuff that might have been just cut off and good to go by my bet. Not certain if they were different trans models if a shaft length is involved - sorry just don't know on that, T
