I decided to replace the seals in the power steering pump in the 2002 Chevy Venture. It had a leak and I thought it was the hoses. I had to unbolt the pump in order to change the hoses. I decided to pull off the fitting that connects to the hard line and check out the o-ring. It was junk so I think that's where the main leak was coming from. So, I picked up a seal kit for $10. I took the ring off of the back cover plate but can't get the cover plate off. It says to just tap the housing with a mallet. There's not really a lip or anything that I can get a hold of to pry it out. Are there any tricks to getting it off? I really want to replace the shaft seal. If I can't get the cover off could I pry the seal out from the front? I'd like to replace the rear cover's o-ring so I'm really hoping I can get it off.

I don't know if that it is serviceable in the field.
Here's what they show as serviceable.

Um...never mind.....I tapped on the shaft and it came off, along with everything else like all of the little vanes. Hope I can get the sob back together right! Any diagrams for me?

Thanks HT. The inside of the pump is kind of like the tranny pump. After working on that I'm 95% sure I can get this back together. There's not really much too it. Except for the little vanes, it fell on the workbench exactly how it came out. I'll think we'll be okay.

Thanks HT. I was able to get it all back together. With the new seal and O-rings hopefully it will be as good as new. I think the pump was fine except for the one leaky o-ring. I just didn't want to get it all back together only to find out it was leaking somewhere else. For $10 I figured why not.
I just finished getting the new lines hooked up. I sure wish I would've done that before the tranny was back in. I didn't realize one was leaking though. They were kind of a pain. Heck, this van may last us another 143k by the time we're done with it.
