Power steering noise Sign In

2003 Chrysler Town & Country Van. 53k miles. Sorry I don't know the engine size. I bought this van about 2 months ago (early December). The power steering was making a terrible low groaning noise even when I was stopped at a light. The dealer agreed to replace the pump, which they did. That was over 3 weeks ago and the new pump is louder than ever. It is quiet in the morning for about 5 minutes then it's noisy all the way to work (a 1/2 hour drive). When I leave work it's noisy for about 20 minutes of driving then it starts to quiet down again. When I turn tightly into a parking space it is very loud and I can feel the moaning in my pedels and it seems to be low near the wheels. First, what is the noise? and second will it eventually go away? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Re: Power steering noise Sign In

Alot of times when the pump is bad it releases metal contamination into the system. If it is not flushed out, the remaining metal in the system will takeout the new pump. If the dealer installed it you should have a 12 month 12k warrenty on all replaced parts.

Re: Power steering noise Sign In

Thanks for that heads up, but it doesn't really answer my question. Since this has only been in the car for just over 3 weeks now, that is not the problem. Could the moaning noise be something else other than the power steering? The pitch and volume of the noise seems relevent to the speed of the car. Lower pitch and slower speeds. Turning the wheel produces a louder noise so this is why I suspected the power steering. Especially when turning tightly. The fact that it eventually quiets down later in the day makes me wonder as well.
