Re:98 Subaru Impreza mystery water leak Sign In

I've got a '98 Subaru Impreza Outback SPort (hatchback) and I have the same problem! Every time it rains the well under the spare tire fills with water. More recently I've noticed that the compartment holding the car jack (vertical panel on the driver's side in the hatchback) was also filling with water. So gross & so frustratingFrown...

It was pouring the other day so I decided to go out and see if I could get a visual on where the water was coming in. I put the back seats down, climbed in the hatchback, & pulled the plastic access panels off the backs of the rear lights. I immediately saw water dripping in (ok-streaming in some spots) from what appeared to be "holes" in the adhesive/black silicone-like material between the car & the light housing. Water was dripping all over the wires & running down in the the car jack compartment AND the base of the spare tire well!!!! As awful as it was I felt relieved that I FINALLY solved the leaky mystery Cool!!!

I'm going to attempt to replace the adhesive/silicone-like material connecting the light housing to the car...hopefully this will provide a permanent solution to the problem!!

(edit - moved - you've tagged onto a neare 4 year old thread with different year and model!)
