My shifter was loose too. I have a 1999 GMC Sonoma, basically the same thing as the S-10. I read this and then I started working on mine. I took out the plastic tray. Then I had to cut the carpet a little to get all the way around the boot on the shifter. There were 10 screws at the bottom of the boot. I took those out and got the boot off. The problem with mine was the shifter itself. It is apparently broken inside. I loosened the nut at the bottom and turned the shifter clockwise to make it go farther down the shaft, and now it's tight again. I tightened the nut and put everything back together. If it happens again, I'll get a new shift lever.
