Hi, 2011 Ford Escape 2.5L XLT with 160k miles It was with my regular mechanic for 2 months for this issue. The same locally owned shop that sent out the head on this vehicle for the infamous Escape cracked valve problem a year ago. Now an unregistered vehicle in my driveway. Here is the video of the cold start intake vacuum gauge reading: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8gbN7of7H0 Notice it starts under 15 Hg and bounces down to 10 Hg and hovers, very rough idle. Then gradually climbs to 15 Hg and hovers. 2:06 something seems to close a vacuum leak? And it moves up to a more normal feeling idle at 18 Hg. 1 second after this change you can hear a distinct CLICK noise. 2:17 it drops back down to 15 Hg with a noticeably rougher idle again. A 12 second interval. 2:46 it then seems to do a commanded return to 18 Hg, also followed 1 second later with a CLICK sound. 2:58 it does another seeming commanded drop back down to 15. ANOTHER 12 second interval of higher vacuum. It throws no P codes except the P1000-00, BUT a misfire was flagged in Mode 6 data. edit: Can the rough idle and misfire for the first two minutes be caused by a partially stuck open EGR valve? Any suggestions? Thanks, Badger

It's apparent something might be sucking up vacuum or it's possible cam timing is changing causing the change in vacuum. You are going to need a high end scan tool to analyze the data in there to come to some typ of conclusion. In the meantime start looking for any possible sources of vacuum leaks. Any suggestions about that very low dip down to 10 Hg right at startup? It seems like it must be getting directed to do that in some way. Also I exported the live data to a spreadsheet. When it's idling steady at 19 - 20 Hg on the vacuum gauge, the MAP sensor is reading about 9.5 Hg. Is it normal for those to disagree by double%?

Nothing intentionally reduces vacuum. That is just the result of other vacuum related components consuming vacuum. I can't tell you what's doing it. You are going to have to track that down yourself. I would probably start out by comparing VVT changes with the vacuum changes. Yes the oil is good. I’m just wondering if this could be a partially stuck open EGR? According to the maintenance history it has never been replaced. The cold start indications aren’t consistent either, about 1/3 of the time the vacuum comes up perfect upon start.

Yes, that's a possibility. When the valve opens it allows exhaust gas into the intake through vacuum which will reduce overall vacuum and cause rough idle.
