'88 GMC 1500, 350 V-8, 5 spd, 160,000 mls. When I first crank up, veh. passes running temp but continues to the point of running hot. Stays in the red for a couple of minutes then drops to normal; like the therm is not opening. Has a new radiator and I've gone through 3 thermostats thinking that was the problem.

Have you verified that it is indeed running too hot, or is it just a sending unit or gauge problem? Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

I wondered about a bad sensor. It has never reached the point of "boiling over", but when it gets in the red I can detect the odor of anit-freeze which has led me to believe that it is in fact over heating.

How does the engine temp do when you are driving? Does it run hot, then? This has a temp. controlled clutch fan that will 'freewheel' when cool, but should 'lock up' once engine temp is reached. The symptoms smack of a sticky thermostat, but three? A long shot, but could be an impeller problem, but would be getting hot all of the time, not just in the transfer from cold to warm.
