I own a 2001 SILVERADO 1500 5.3L/AUTO/4X4. today I took a 90 mile trip up to see my oldest grandson. on the way across the 2 lane roads-speed 55 mph-I noticed the OD wasn't kicking in. when I sped up to 65-68mph...it would engage. any speed below 60 mph...it would not engage. another element I noticed was that I saw a "TOW/HAUL" light on...on my dashboard. I was "NOT" towing or hauling anything. what I would like to know is if this could be a "SPEED SENSOR" issue??? would a "FAULTY" sensor cause the "TOW/HAUL" warning light to show on my dashboard. does anyone have any suggestions for this issue?? THANX.

I think you have a selection to choose how vehicle will behave if towing or hauling anything to delay lock up of torque converter and would illuminate a light to tell you so. Check on that and just put it back to normal driving use. High bet here on that as trucks can be ordered with wild options up to nothing behind the cab and assorted packages to help with how it will be used. A "towing package" would be available to do just this. Look in glove box and see if it shows the options truck was ordered with, T

Yes, that has to be a manual selection made in the truck somewhere. Look for the switch. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

2001 I believe tow haul switch is a button at the end of the gear selector lever... Info in owners manual, while you have our focus - is the CEL on, always check for codes. Page 2-28 http://cdn.dealereprocess.com/...01-silverado1500.pdf

OP - As said and "high bet" this truck was ordered with this feature! Just turn it off. I couldn't possibly list out all the possible features a truck can come with. A "tow" package would come with extra cooling and more for engine, oil and trans no doubt that are passive not on a switch, T

HEY MAN!!! you were "RIGHT ON"!!! I just checked the lever & I saw the printing for "TOW/HAUL" with the arrow pointing to the button. I guess I hit it advertently. I sure hope that doesn't hurt gas mileage if it "ENGAGES" anything!!! THANX for the HEADS UP.

Towing isn't about fuel economy this setting is helping save your vehicle! IMO and basically towing anything but the lightest brush trailer or load for "HAUL" without some automatic anything you would drive slower, probably should avoid use of overdrive (locking up torque converter) and perhaps alter how anti-lock brakes work? I would expect if this package ordered you get at least an extra cooling system capability and added transmission fluid and other fluids. Look for small radiators in front of the regular ones. Your suspension may be upgraded for more legal load than a plain 1500 would have and other things? IDK - you would select this option if ordering vehicle new. If you do not haul or tow much or at all you just don't need the feature so don't turn it on. Hauling + loads are about safety, control of vehicle and saving your engine/trans not about saving fuel so you sure did use more than it would have on HWY driving with that setting on. Hey - techno options can only know so much this no exception, T

Yes, higher shift points would cause lower fuel mileage but it would protect your trans from overheating under load.
