Hi Everyone, Problem on steering. I have a 2006 Porsche 911 Carrerra 4 (997) (4 wheel drive). Since day one, the steering has been uneven meaning that it is "looser" or has more give when I turn right and is "tighter" or more responsive when I turn left. The alignment is normal and straight. I've brought it back to the dealer 4 times and they've changed the steering rack but say there's nothing else more they can do. This has been extemely frustrating b/c its makes it unenjoyable to drive a sports car b/c of this difficult handling. I dont' know anything about the steering mechanism of Porsches, esp. a 4 wheel drive system but I'm thinking could there be a problem in the steering column? What else could I have them look at or demand to replace? Thank you.

I dont know Porsche vehicles at all...never had the pleasure of driving a Carrerra.... But .. First of all...have you driven/compared the vehicle to like vehicles? Is it design intent or is there a problem? I would first see if the dealer has another vehicle to compare this to. I would also get the Service manager involved,if necessary the Dealer principal and contact customer service at Porsche. You pay huge money to drive vehicles today and especially a Porsche... Has the Dealer service personnel contacted Porsche technical assistance? All manufacturers have tech asst and they can call for help...sometimes they may not have an answer but it will get the ball rolling...plus,they can look into their data base and see if other similar situations have been called in and what was done to correct them. Sometimes it can be where there is no known fix at this time,but this makes Engineering aware of the situation and they will work on a fix! Once a case is called in/made ,it is documented and when the repair is complete,dealers are required to contact them with their findings and corrections.. When a case like this occurs and it cannot be repaired and it is determined there is a problem with the vehicle, they will send out an engineer to work side by side with the dealer tech to find a solution...seen this a few times with GM vehicles...... Hey - I don't know Porche for squat but some things are univeral. Anything steering must be installed with steering wheel on indes for straight ahead - most put a mark on the spindle at steering wheel under whatever covering and air bag. Right down the line things must be on straight ahead position if taken apart or just removed for some reason. The steering must allow for the front wheels to be aimed such as to not scrub like on a full circle they aren't pointing in paralell for that time. Cruder vehicles cover this by allowing and designing in "freeplay" when not going straight ahead to cover it. Feel steering freeplay in a car - any car with engine off when turned near extreme there should be freeplay but not much on center. Most cars have a "grace" spot like between 10:30 to 1:30 on a clock where they are lash free. If set into the exteme ends of this area it would allow more freeplay too early one way than the other. You should be able to check that the dead on spot is on center just sitting still. It could be aligned to 11:00 o'clock and that isn't right! This can happen when a steering wheel is removed and not put on target and subsequent alignment "centers" the wheel using tie rod adjustments and may not know it's off elsewhere. My guess is problem is at the steering wheel and then a re-centering that any front end shop would do in a minute. Any history of work there? T

Thanks. These are extremely helpful. Yes, I did contact corporate and they are sending an engineer to work out the issue with me. Will keep you posted.
