Shrieking noise/fan

I have a 2000 Nissan Frontier, 4 cyl. Recently the engine started to shriek. It wasn't during cold startups, but usually during acceleration or deceleration. I took it to my mechanic and he replaced a belt and adjusted the tensioner, but a couple days later the problem stared all over again. This morning I noticed that it only happens when I have the fan in the cab running to circulate air. That's a littler weird, but I guess that fan runs off one of the belts in the engine compartment. By the way, I don't think this isn't a case of worn bearings in the fan motor. The noise is much louder and from the engine compartment. It sounds just like a slipping belt during cold startup. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

It's probably the AC compressor doing that. It's probably triggered with the fan switch. You can try unplugging the compressor and see if the noise stops.

Thanks, Hammer Time. I experimented with the AC on and off, and it made the noise either way. If it was the compressor, would it be making the noise if the AC was off but the fan was on?

Have you checked the tension of the AC belt?
Take a spray bottle with soapy water and spray the belt when the screeching is going on. If the noise goes away inspect the belts and their tension. If the noise is still there, you have another problem.

Thanks everyone. It turned out to be a belt, which is great. I wasn't going to be able to afford a new air conditioning compressor.

The AC belt is what I was suspecting when I told you to try it with and without AC.
