Hi, I have a 1991 Olds Cutlass Supreme with a 3.1 liter V-6 with approx. 77000 miles on the clock. I would like to know any easy way (if there is one) to remove the rear plugs up against the "Firewall". In addition I would like to know what to set the gap at. Are these those 1000.00 mile platinum plugs I remember from the nineties? Does the Engine have to be pulled to access them? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, revolver693

The recommended replacement interval is 30K miles. I would recommend using either AC/Delco or Autolite spark plugs, single platinum will be fine. You can spend the money on dbl. platinum if you wish. To get to the back plugs, remove the upper 'dog bone' motor mounts. There is a tool that goes in, in place of one of the mounts that 'pulls' the engine forward to give access to the rear plugs. I tried to find a picture of the tool, but wasn't able to. Another way, takes two people. Put the transmission in park, remove the mount(s), have a helper rock the vehicle forward...when the engine moves enough, jamb the parking brake at that precise moment. It's hard to do, may take a few tries, but that's the way we had to do it the 'old' days prior to the nifty tool. Loren SW Washington

The trick Loren mentioned is about the quickest/easiest way to do it. One other thing you can do (after the mounts are removed) it you don't have the tool is to use a floor jack with a piece of wood on the trans pan (so as not to bend it) & lift the motor that way to get to the plugs. Just be sure to put a jack stand under there....... Don't ever trust your personal saftey to some thing hydraulic with no locks.......

as Loren stated there is a tool to help rock the engine forward, but I would recommend setting the E-Brake anmd blocking or chocking the wheels and ensuring the vehicle is on a flat level surface , then place the vehicle in neutral, this will allow the engine to rock forward with ease, no excessive force needed, take one of the dog bone mounts out, and put the through bolt that held the mount onto the bracket back into the braket with the nut to hold it in place, now undo the other mount, use a small pry bar behind the bolt you put into the engine mount bracket to allow leverage to rick forward, and then using a GM Engine strap tool or what the aftermarket world calls a nylon belt strap similar to a tie down ratcheting strap you can now use the pry bar to rock the engine as far forward toward the radiator as possible and a friend can use the strap to lock onto the bolt at the other mount brakcet and then hook it into the cross over radiator support and ratchet to tighten. Now you have ease of access to the rear of the engine.
