Starting problem '89 Chevy Celebrity

Hi, I have an '89 Chevy Celebrity, 2.5 L motor. Within the last year, I've had the battery and starter replaced. The neutral safety switch needs replacing as bad motor mounts rocking back and forth broke the bolt connections on the switch. After replacing the mounts, the NSS is free floating and will start the car with just a little push from reverse into park while turning the key. I know I need to replace the switch but it's expensive and the car starts fine for now with a little manipulation. I believe my starting problem is not related to the safety switch anyway. This has been happening on mornings following a cold night for the last month or so. I open the hood of the car to place the NSS in the proper position so I won't need to jiggle the shift lever, get in the car turn the key, and get a humming sound for appoximately 15 to 20 seconds or longer (its a loud hum) before something engages the starter and it turns over. I use the car all day and as long as it starts first thing in the morning, it will start all day without a problem. It hasn't failed to start yet, but the loud hum that occurs before the starter engages is getting to be a longer time, and I'm concerned something will go eventually. The battery seems fine, I replaced it about 6 months ago, and the headlights and interior light is always fairly bright when I test them or get in the car. This is a mystery to me - I want to get another car eventually but must rely on this car for now with the economy the way it is. Sounds like the fuel pump is on when I turn the key to accessory before turning it further to start. The hum from the fuel pump is faint compared to the loud hum that occurs when I turn the key further to start it. Wonder if anyone would be familiar with what this problem might be. Any advice really appreciated, Happy New Year. drumsnkeys

Where’s this humming coming from; under the hood, dash; the starter itself, a relay? If from the starter; it may have a bad solenoid; that when the temp is down, it is not strong enough to engage the drive to the flywheel? You may need to have someone work the ignition while you track down where the hum originates from? Dan. Canadian "EH"

Thanks for the response. It does come from under the hood. Your suggestion about having someone turn the key while I try to find the source of the sound is a good one.
