Stuck Thermostat ? 2003 Chevy 3400 SFI Sign In

I have a 2003 Chevy Impala with a 3400 SFI. It has 180,000 miles runs great but just recently when I start it up the temp just keeps climbing and engine light comes on, warning bell etc... . After a few minutes it comes back down to normal temp and everything is back to normal. I have checked the anti-freeze and it's full. I am assuming this is a stuck thermostat. After looking at the engine I believe the thermostat is on drivers side of engine under the air inlet. Is that correct. Any help would be appreciated as I have to remedy this problem before I do any damage to the engine and my finances won't allow me to take it to be repaired right at this time. Thanks for any and all responses. Jim

You might want to rethink not getting it repaired right now. It only take the temp to rise too high just once and you have serious engine damage.

Check that level again at the radiator itself because it could have air pockets in the system. It's common for this engine. The system has to be bled to get all the air out.

I want to fix this problem this weekend thats why I was asking if this sounds like a stuck thermostat and if I am looking in the right spot for the thermostat to be at. In order for it to have trapped air wouldn't the system have had to been opened and some anti-freeze lost in order for air to get in and be trapped. When I checked to see if it was low was the first time the cap was off in over 2 months this problem started 2 days ago. Correct me if I am wrong. Jim

Bad thermostats are not very common. It's a lot more common to have a slow leak in the system that leads to air pockets.
The T-stat is on the driver's side under the exhaust but it's a little difficult to access. I would try filling and pressure testing the system first. These engines are pretty notorious for leaks at the intake manifold gasket.
