Stuck front rotor Sign In

1999 Chevrolet Suburban 2500 with 150k miles. 4WD

I am trying to get the rotor off.

I got the spindle nut off but it took a 24 inch breaker bar and my 250+ lbs standing on it to break loose.

Now I cant get the rotor off. I have tapped with a hammer here there and verywhere on the rotor. Since I am replacing it and it didn't budge my hammer size increased to a 24 oz. hammer and some hard hits. As I was picking up my 5 lb baby sledge I thought I might ask if there is something I am missing.

Re: Stuck front rotor Sign In

Shoot me if I'm wrong but the hub stays put and rotor comes off of it while in place.

Rotor should look like this......

It's just "hovering" over the hub but can stick from rust build up pretty hard! Put that hub nut back on and just get some PB (power blaster is awesome) penetrating oil in gaps with the exposed wheel lug/studs - hub to center of rotor area and tap outside edge of rotor inward on opposite sides till it starts to wobble free - then it should remove.

If this rotor is like your replacement to only thing really holding in on hub is the wheel lug nuts AND the caliper when in place. There may be a braket to remove (I just plain forgot layout of this type) after caliper is off,

Re: Stuck front rotor Sign In

yea i hope you didnt take that spindle nut off just to remove the rotor..... if your set on replacing the rotor anyway take your baby sledge and stand over the rotor and give it some heavy hard wacks alternating impact at 3 and 9 oclock. itll come off for sure........just make sure you use the lug nuts to protect the lugs

Re: Stuck front rotor Sign In

That is a correct picture of the replacemnt rotor that I have.

Here are a couple pictures of what I am dealing with. The spindle will move in if I push on it. Do I need to remove that?

If I am correct you are saying hamer the rotor on to loosen it. I put some penetrating oil in the spidle is there somewhere else to put that?

The rivits chewed up the inside pretty good, so I definately have to replace.

Re: Stuck front rotor Sign In

Arggh! Just posted your pics directly for better view. I'm sorry but this hub DOES need to come off! Consider that a wheel bearing replacement job first as the bearing and hub should be the same. I'll try searching for some details but came up short for some reason today the spot I use was screwed up.

My guess is there are bolts on back holding this hub AFTER the larger spindle nut is removed as in pic the nuts in back hard to see if at all below - then the whole thing comes apart and rotor would go on backside of that hub for reassembly.

I am sorry for the confusion. Things like this just are apparent when they are right in front of ME and I was stuck on how most 1/2 ton jobs would go and it's different than this!

Look for bolts in back that hold the hub.......Then - I think you get a choice of replacing a seal if you decide to also - your call..... (guess it's brain dead Sunday for meCrazy)

Re: Stuck front rotor Sign In

Memory is eluding me, right now, but I'm pretty sure that the rotor bolts to the hub, from the rear. Meaning, the hub/rotor has to come off as an assy. Can't remember if it's Ford, Chev, or Dodge, but again, fading memory, seems that there are four (or five) bolts hidden behind the backing plate that holds the assy. to the spindle.

Re: Stuck front rotor Sign In

I removed the four bolts on the back but nothing seperated yet. It seems to be attached to the spindle arm.
Two thoughts:
Would it make sense to punch out the Studs? maybe there is some bolts attaching the rotor under the hub?
Do I have to somehow remove the spindle arm?

You mention bearings. Where would they be located? Would it be sufficient to repack them or is it better to replace them?

Re: Stuck front rotor Sign In

Once you have removed the four or five bolts holding the hub to the spindle, some love taps with a mallet should be enough for it to come off. The bearing assy. will come out with the hub. Your call if you want to replace it.

Re: Stuck front rotor Sign In

Is there a place I can find a schematic of this? If I knew how it was all put together I would understand better how to take it apart. The hub still will not release, I think I need to push in the studs to separate the hub from the rotor.

Re: Stuck front rotor Sign In

Holy crap this is messed up.

Here's a link that will take you to hell and back with some possibilities if this is HD or not so I'll let you dig thru it......

http://www.autozone.com/...eId=0900c152800a6d1c

Same place gave me little to no help the other day. There are two possible ways. If over 8600 GVW it was more of a real project and if under was more basically whack that rotor off the bearing best I could tell from the pics. They are real cute with tech data not to discuss wicked stuck and rust obstacles and that is or can be the whole issue. Surely you don't want to be smashing away at something not just stuck but needed more to do first.

I tried to look for bearing replacement procedures as that (even if you keep old one which you should if good) could be in the game and it started to confuse me more with procedures for that.

It really appears from your pic that this rotor should come off from just the way it looks in your pic. The gaps in the rotor around the studs which are part of the bearing hub assy won't be centered now somewhat prooving that it just stuck and comes off. If those were perfectly centered I'd suspect they were retained by unseen bolts or something from behind. Now I don't think this one is that way. Guess it matters tons what the GVW is how they did what with this. The first of these two is the usual 2500 bearing and the second either HD or for the 3500 series........ (I think)

Now that's you own pic again. It appears the studs are on the hub/bearing going thru this rotor. This type can stick like it's welded right at the 4" or so center more than the flat contact behind rotor to face of hub. There's some shadow in this pic but I seems there's some larger gap at stud thru hole in rotor which is further suggesting it's a sparate part that just is meant to come off of th hub at this stage - larger hammer if needed to hit at opposite sides and the pentrating oil to help.

That's the AutoZone site if it doesn't click and cause more hair loss. Choosing pics of what you need and what they are on shows me how they would go better and it's still leaving some mistakes in the software there. Great!

The rotor is to be replace anyway so the hammer isn't likely to hurt it anymore than it is. Once it move a nudge it should rock and then behave for you.

I'm trying?? We're trying and the AZ site has some canned instructions and some pics that may help or not,

T

See how one comes with studs on the hub and one from God knows where from behind. I see the confusion more now as most parts would come with studs and not expect you to put in new ones so the last pic seems like the rotor would have them pre-installled. I just haven't had the good fortune to have gone thru this one to help better than the basic ideas of how this is done.

I'll look back again and edit as needed at your pic to see if I can nail this procedure down better,

T

Re: Stuck front rotor Sign In

You can see from the pics that Tom supplied, there will be three or four (I originally said four or five...ooops) bolts holding the hub/bearing assy. to the spindle. As noted in the pics, the bearing assy. goes into a matching hole in the spindle and are commonly rusty. Once the bolts are out, you should be able to knock the assy. out of the spindle. Then, the bolts holding the rotor to the hub will be accessable. If the studs are holding the rotor to the hub, which is common, you can 'carefully' (not damaging the threads) knock them out from the front, and re-use them. Just be sure that they are completely seated once done.
