Stuck in park Sign In

I have a 2001 KIA Sophia that I can not get out of park. I stored it in the garage for the winter and I can not get it out of park. I press the brake, push the button on the shifter and it wont move. The steering wheel is free to move. It is an automatic trans. Any clues for me to get it shifting?

Thanks
R.Kendall

Some cars have an override for the system that leaves you in Park. It's usually a key slot that will take most any key. Other possiblility is that the brake light switch is broken and that if your brake lights won't light that's a good chance that's the problem, T

Sounds to me like a linkage problem, maybe lost a part when you put in in park. Look in the floorboard for a screw or a bolt.

If it's not the key lock (found on many eastern vehicles) than your release button isn't functioning properly, the shifter can be disassembled with a phillips screw driver and possibly small allen wrenches will be needed, with the shifter cover removed engage the release button and look for proper function, also if any sugared drink was spilled even a little the shifter can feel stuck and if it's that spray with water while trying to shift (emergency brake on) and when it's loose follow the water with WD-40.I'm sure you haven't used the shifter abnormally in a sephia so the chances of linkage damage are slim even here in the rust belt.I'd work my way down to that.

You may want to check the brake light fuse. Like Tom said, the release solenoid is pulled in by the stoplight switch. If the switch is bad, or the fuse is blown, the shifter won't release.
