Tachometer Sign In

My 2004 GMC Envoy, with 84,000 miles on it, has developed a problem in its tachometer. When driving at 53 mph the tachometer normally registers 1,500 RPM. Now, at the same speed it will read well over 2,000 RPM and with the engine off, the tachometer is stuck at 750 RPM.
Is there an easy fix I can try? If not, can it be repaired or what has to be replaced? Is a part or the whole assembly available at a used auto parts yard? What is a reasonable price for what I'll need?

Re: Tachometer Sign In

That is part of the dash cluster and only serviced as an entire cluster. The cluster a pretty common failure and remans are available pretty reasonable. ($400 or less)

Don't attempt to buy used as they have to be programmed to your specific vehicle.

Re: Tachometer Sign In

Correct me if I'm wrong HT but can't the stepper motors be replaced on an Envoy cluster? I ask because I had them replaced on my Sierra. The guy also fixed the PRND321 because it wouldn't light up. Cost me $100 and didn't have to worry about getting the miles programmed or anything. I guess all of this is assuming that the stepper motor is even the problem.

Of course it can be repaired, given the know how and parts to do it. That's how they get rebuilt in the first place but these people and places are not generally accessible to the general public.

Re: Tachometer Sign In

I got you. A buddy of mine with a Suburban had to get a new cluster and he said it cost him $450. That's what got me looking around. I had to mail mine off to Oklahoma to get it done. The guy repaired it the day he got it and mailed it back the same day. I had it back in about 5 days and that included transit time. He seemed to do a great job and I have no complaints.

There you go HT. Another department you can add to your shops.

Re: Tachometer Sign In

I've bought remans from the dealer for under $400 and I understand that Dormon is offering some remans now too.

Re: Tachometer Sign In

That's good to know about the remans since our Envoy may need a new cluster. I still haven't figured out why the dic flashes "oil pressure low" for a second right when you turn the key. I believe you mentioned there's a good chance it's the cluster. I checked oil pressure when running and it's fine. Just not sure what else to check. I've scoured the web and haven't seen anyone else have the same issue. I did change the oil a couple days ago. I doubt it did anything but I need to see if it's still doing it. The only bad thing is if I need a new cluster I'll have to swap out the cluster background lights. I swapped all interior lights out with pink leds for the wife as a surprise. Oh well. I won't go into the "low oil pressure" here anymore because I don't want to hijack the op's thread.

Thanks HT.

Re: Tachometer Sign In

With a good bidirectional scan tool you can operate everything from the scanner to test the response.
