Okay...so I own a 2002 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 liter V-6. In the last two years I have had the water pump, fuel pump, alternator, and battery replaced. Too say nothing of the oil leak I had fixed. I do change the oil every 3,000 miles or so, because I do mostly city driving. My problem is...there is a clicking sound coming from underneath the hood. It seems to only be there when I am idling or driving at lower speeds. Once when I opened the hood, I noticed the sound seemed to be coming from whatever belt is located at the very front of the car. Since I know nothing about cars generally, which belt is this? Timing? Drive? The car has 94k miles on it, and I am not certain if the previous owners ever changed the timing belt. The manual says it is recommended at 100k. My biggest concern is that these Intrepids have been known to collect sludge in the engines, which can cause all sorts of problems. I've changed the oil fairly religiously so not to have that happen, but who knows at this point. Help! What is making this noise? -Mitch

Is there only one belt that runs between all pulleys? That is a serpentine belt. You might try for a quick fix purchasing a can of belt dressing and spray on the side of the belt that contacts the pulleys.

The belt I was referring to was the only one that I could see from just looking with the hood open. Do serpentine belts make a clicking noise if there is something wrong with them?

The way I would proceed is to try to eliminate some of the possibilities.....take the drive belt off and check the tentioner pulley/ idler pulley by turning them with your hand, notice any signs of roughness when doing this, before putting the belt back on.....crank the vehicle for a minute and see if the ticking is still there, if it is then it maybe coming from one of the heads or the timing belt.
