Ticking/Rattle Noise from Chevy Express Sign In

Chevy Express 2500
2012
184000KM
4.8 V8 LS

Hey Guys,

I've had a ticking/rattling noise coming from my Chevy Express for a while now. Doesn't effect performance but is constant from startup and goes up and down with the rev of the engine.

Here's a link to give an idea of what it sounds like.
https://youtu.be/QRpQWU8uQG8

I had it serviced a little while back and they isolated the sound to the DS Valvetrain but quoted me another $550 just for them to take the cover off and diagnose it further. I've read that it's pretty common for the lifters to go bad so that's my best guess as someone with very little mechanical experience.

Don't expect anyone to be able to say for certain but if anyone could hazard a guess or has had a similar issues then let me know.

Thanks!

No, I don't believe that is a valve noise. The frequency is too fast for that.

To me is sounds like the torque converter bolts are hitting the tin dust cover. That cover gets bent easily and only starts with about 1/8" clearance. You can easily find out by just touching the cover with the engine running. You would feel it hitting from behind.

The garage said they were certain it was coming from the DS Valvetrain as they isolated it with a stethoscope. They had it hoisted up so would they not have noticed if it was coming from the torque converter bolts if that was the issue?

The sound seems very similar to vids I've found online that have been caused by the lifter.

I say they are wrong.

The crankshaft rotates two times for one revolution of the camshaft so it can't repeat a noise that fast.
Also any valve train issue WOULD effect the way the engine runs.

I suggest you get a second opinion.

Ok thanks, I'll do that.

I guess the next question...

Is it possible that there's 2 separate issues causing the noise.

And there's never been any issue with the performance or how the engine runs so you think that deffo rules out the valve train?

There is one overwhelming noise there. If there is a second one, this one is drowning it out.

It's a metal on metal noise from something rotating against a stationary object.

Ok thanks.

I'll get a second opinion and hopefully it's just a single issue.

I wouldn't rule out something in the timing chain area either.
