Tire wall cut Sign In

I have just had a new tire put on my spare wheel and on my way back home, the wheel and tire fell off. This is a PU truck and the spare is stored under the bed.

As a result, I have a cut in the side wall. At the deepest, the cut is less than a 16th of an inch. It is also about 5 inches long starting at the tread. Definitely not a major cut but I feel like it does make the tire more vulnerable and since it is brand new, I am thinking of asking the shop to replace it.

What do you think?

Thank you.

Unless the shop was responsible for the incident that caused the damage, they are unlikely to replace it for you unless you purchased road hazard insurance from them.

If the description you gave about the damage is accurate, it sounds like the tire was not damaged structurally and will be fine.

rv - this begs the question - are you able to put the tire back up? What condition is the truck? Did the cable break? If in good shape meaning mostly untrusted I suppose you could crank that up so tight it could stress out the mechanism or break the cable. I'm surprised you went for a new spare tire also instead of used for a spare,

Hammer Time, I assumed they didn't put it back in place correctly and since I left town (with another vehicle) as soon as I got home, I didn't investigate. Will need to slip under the truck and look when I get home.

OH, it's the spare that fell off. I misunderstood and thought one of the wheels on the truck came off and caused the damage. Yes, it sounds like they would be responsible.

Tom, see my response to Hammer Time which means: 1/ I don't know, 2/ I don't know and 3/ I don't know. Crazy

As for the new spare, simple enough. Bought the truck used with really bad tires all around but because the truck doesn't leave the immediate area much I didn't replace the spare. Now that the truck is going to cross the country, I wanted to take care of the spare and because I ride motorcycles, I tend to never use used tires. Even for a spare Smile

A very good policy to follow. A lot of people don't realize a tire has a safe usable life of about 6 years after that they are very susceptible to failure. The date they were manufactured is the last 4 digits of the DOT number on the tire. The 1st 2 digits is the week, the last 2 is the year.
