1994
Chevrolet
C1500
5.7
120,000 Miles.

Recently got it running after sitting for at least 6-7 years without being started. Had to replace fuel pump and time it to get it to start.

Drove it around the block and it wouldn’t shift gears. Pulled the ODM Codes: 42, 66, 67. Reset the codes and as of now, the codes are gone, I would image the 66 and 67 will come back.

Other things I noticed: speedometer, gas gauge, and odometer do not work. The rest of the the gauges function.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Should I just check the solenoids that the codes point to, and is there anything else I should look at?

Do you have a history of what you have and if original or not?

Trucks have near endless variant options and requirements for these model years hope that VIN can help.

How it was stored or just parked totally matters so if you know, what and how.

Outdoors just sitting or up on blocks/ stands expecting this time out?

OMG - I'll stop when you reply if an exposed vehicle just plain not used left sitting would be a total redo. Exposed meaning rain, sun, hot, cold or whatever came its way.

Good news is endless parts for them available mostly cloned, many used also.

Are you determined for this exact one?

Is the transmission still not shifting?

The first thing to check is the 10A Trans fuse.

After that look it over thoroughly for chewed wires from animals

It has been stored in a garage this entire time. I’ve owned the truck since 2002. It was driven consistently until about 2010. Then intermittently for a few years before being parked in a garage for an extended stay.

Other than just routine maintenance, and a new starter and alternator at some point when it was being used consistently, the fuel pump is the only thing that i have replaced.

I have checked the TRANS fuse. It is fine. I guess it wouldn’t hurt to just put a new one in.

I have checked the wiring over the last couple months as I’ve been diagnosing what’s been going on causing the no start. The wiring has all seemed fine and no issues that I have found. All of the heat shields are in place, and not chewed through or anything. I will keep checking, but I haven’t found anything concerning with wiring yet.

If you can visually find a wiring problem, then you will have to resort to electrical testing of the wiring and power supplies.

Once the integrity of all the wiring and connections have been verified, then and only then you will consider replacing the solenoid pack.

You can test fuses in place when that item should have power.
Fuel pump done - fine but maybe not? Many GMs really want the OE one, whole with gauge for the size tank. I'll just trust you tended to old fuel it just can't go 6-7 years would be all cleaned out or left dry and empty?

Critters, inside or out leave chewed wires, insulation for things sometimes a nest found?

Basics: Hose for anything vacuum is probably a TBI injection looks like a carb at a glance. Low and back I think maybe rubber hose base of TBI? Forgot it's been ages.

Any are for a reason.

Some models use a crank sensor some didn't - I searched it.

Heat shields if you meant for hot exhaust items great are intact some missing could burn wires not for just the trip around the block so fast.

Tough era on cars and trucks several changes possible even midyear made may matter for exact info.

Perhaps if OE pay the price for diagrams at your beck and call specific to VIN should tell what it was made with.

Stickers for options and meets 48 state, 49 state and or CA standards as well if still readable.

Storage that long is problematic - forget tires, battery brand new cars get screwed if unsold.

Keep at it the killer to me is also common is rust was a 2002 the shifter rusted off a trans plain fell down at the transmission didn't look like a rust bucket either?

Keep trying I expect issues and think you do too. Yes you can takes time and what shows up with longer and longer drives.

Good luck, report what you find the time out must be the cause so
"what took the hit for this?" to find,
Tom

Let's stay on track with the one problem you asked about, the trans shifting.

IDK if too strong of solvents were used to clear out bad fuel could lower vacuum to a sender on to electric. Open book that's a long time, T

I have no idea what that even means or what it has to do with transmission solenoids not working.

I like the idea of one problem at a time. Transmission shifting is next.

old gas and all of that is taken care of, and I’m not going to take it out on the highway with current tires, brakes, etc.

I will take a deeper dive into the wiring over the weekend and see if I can see anything. And if not, I will begin testing. Like I said, the heat shields around all of the wiring seem to be in good shape. And the wiring that I’ve looked at along the way as well. I know that isn’t the end all. But I will begin the hunt.

Is there anything else that I should be looking at that could be causing this—before I start taking transmission apart and checking/replacing solenoids I want to exhaust all other electrical/ECM potential problems that could cause this. This is a project at this point, and the vehicle is sentimental. I don’t have to have it running next week—In it for the long haul.

Do you know how to test the integrity of the wiring.

You have to test for power supply at the solenoids, continuity back to the PCM, no shorts between wires, etc.

That's where it gets pretty complicated and you need some electrical knowledge.

You also need to be able to identify connector positions and read a wiring diagram.

So…

I went to double check fuses. The trans fuse was good, but the brakes fuse was blown. Would have sworn it was good when I checked them a few days ago.

Anyway. Put the brakes fuse in, and bam…speedometer, odometer working…and it shifts into 3rd gear at least. Only got it to 40 mph, but shifted smoothly.

Thanks for all the replies. Now onto looking at everything else!
