Hi, I'm no car expert but i will try explain the situation. Our old VW golf popped the main water inlet which caused the car to loose all the water. We made a temp fix and got it home. We then realized that there was water in the oil. So we handed it to a guy who said he was able to fixe the problem. The car took three weeks to repair. They had to skim the head, put in new lifters and pistons. We also got the clutch kit replaced. When we got it back I drove about 30 km before it popped a welch plug. We then sent it to another guy who found blockages in the radiator and manifold water inlet. Those were apparently fixed. My wife then drove the car 20km and water started to fizz out of the gasket and started to over heat. Now we are told that car needs to be stripped down completely and started over for 12 thousand rand. My question is is it necessary to strip all the way down and do a complete rebuild? Any advice here from a pro VW mechanic? Thanks!

Just at a glance of what was fixed and why it happened without you saying what year doesn't even matter. That engine fried and should never have been fixed IMO. When that bad you find another whole engine depending a checked out used one or newly rebuild other one and fix all the problems with hoses and cooling system that were harmed or late to be replaced anyway. Not sure why a clutch job was involved because of an overheat but may have shown it was ready while there? Sorry it happened but I wouldn't continue fixing that engine at all, T

Thanks Tom, you are probably right. I think I should seek out another motor for the golf. I am sure there are many out there that wont cost an arm and a leg.

You or your shop/mechanic of choice who DOES this stuff choose a salvage yard (junkyard) whatever you call them for a well documented used low mile/km engine from exact matching one you have that has a history sheet on it. Why it was a totaled vehicle in the first place is nice to know. Hey - trees fall on cars no to be fixed and other reasons engines were not involved - you want one of those if at all possible. I speak for how it goes here for me that the yards cars end up in that are not to be fixed for assorted reasons will fully document the major parts. It's still not done as you would change out all fluids, hoses and oils plus match up any electronic controls if this vehicle is connected to drivetrain parts could require that. Right shop, right used part would be my choice. They would be on a crate with the info sheet listed, miles/kms known and what checked. How much is local or how popular. Most offer the engine a full but short guarantee not including labor if it failed. This is something a shop/garage you may call them either does or doesn't take on at all. Ask if one doesn't who does in your area. When you mentioned cracks and junk blown at radiator your old engine had to suffer much worse than was noticed unfortunately. Cut the loses if the vehicle is still worth this and find the right help as said. It's done all the time, T
