2002 VW Jetta Regular Engine 2.0 150k miles -------------------- I have a 2002 Jetta 11 years old now. No major issues other than your wear and tear. So today I am at the gas station filling up. I start the car and it stalls on me. The EPC light, battery light, and I think engine light all turned on. Called AAA, they didn't know what was wrong with it so they called in their tow service. Car sat there for over an hour while waiting for the tow truck to come. tower comes tries to start the car and same thing. But then while he's loading it on the truck, he reaches down in front of the car, bangs something w/ his tool, starts the car and it works now, it actually starts and I drove it home which was only 1-2 miles away. He tells me bad fuel pump. Now car is here at home but I am afraid it may not start to get it to the shop tomorrow. But based on what i wrote, do you experts think it is only fuel pump problem? it was weird that right after I filled up the car this occurred, never occurred before too. and the whole EPC / BATTERY LIGHT coming on I thought the engine had had it. Thanks.

He banged on something in the front of the car or the back of the car? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

There's nothing related to the fuel pump up there. It may have been the starter he was hitting. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

hammer thanks a lot for the quick response. I hope I can get it to the mechanic tomorrow. hoping it will start in the morning and make it there. so you think it's an electrical issue? I was researching this around the net but nobody had the exact issue, but I saw a lot of posts saying that it was due to some electrical malfunction since it had the EPC light on. But when the towing guy did that, and said fuel pump, i thought it made sense because the car started dieing/stalling right after i pumped it full of new gas.

No, I have no information on your problem to conclude anything but the fuel pump is in the back of the car not the front. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

well the car was in the shop the last 3 days but they could not mimic the same problem. Guy said the fuel pump worked fine, starter is fine, and everytime he started the engine no stalling issues like at the gas station. One time thing? Do I have to go to the dreaded dealer who will charge me a arm and a leg just to look at it? Been asking around and people are telling me that since my engine did start and just stall and die, it's probably not the starter but the fuel injection. but there are many parts between the fuel injection to the engine so it could be anything. at a loss now. guess I have to crawl back to the dealer.

If the problem can't be duplicated, then it can't be diagnosed. you're right. I am not going to the dealer. i know when i get there, they charge over $100 bucks just to investigate and then will come up with some b.s. fix that is unrelated and over priced.

Dealers are not overpriced. The tools required to properly diagnose problems are not cheap try thousands of dollars for an initial price for a scan tool and thousands more to keep the software up to date, not to mention the specific manufacturer training the technicians go through. And all the special manufacturer specific tools that they are REQUIRED to purchase to be a dealer. Yes dealerships are nude expensive than independent shops, but with good reason, I'm not putting down independent shops but they can charge less for diagnosis because they are not required to have as many tools. And as for a bs fix the best ANY technician can do when a vehicle is not acting up is to give a SUGGESTION on a possible issue based on data collected. I went ahead and took it to the dealer. Spring break is around the corner and one of my kids wants the car to drive down on break so better just get it all in working condition. What the dealer did was measure the amp of the Fuel Pump. Dealer said standard is like 8 amps, mine was hovering around 13/14 amps. He said this is a sign that the fuel pump is malfunctioning. So they have to replace the Fuel Pump + other related stuff, think he said filter and another piece, all coming out to around $600 with labor / tax included. I guess I'll just do it.

Is he going to guarantee that solves the problem? I doubt it.

No, not really. But I think there is a 1 year warranty on the part and service.

It's not the part that I'm concerned about. It's the diagnosis that concerns me. Just because it's drawing a little too much current doesn't mean it is the cause of your issue.

14 amps is quite a bit. A plugged up filter can cause a pump to draw more amps too, if the motor doesn't have a lot of resistance going on from being worn out. If you want to look at the condition of the brushes in the pump, you have to current ramp it with a lab scope. HT is right though. It may be a problem, but might not be the problem that caused the stall. Then again it may be the cause of the stall. No way to really tell unless it happens again and someone is there to catch it. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

$600 is a steep gamble if you're wrong. I wouldn't drop that kind of money without it being diagnosed. Like DS said, a waveform on a scope would show the individual commutator bars of the fuel pump motor. If some are dropping out or shorting they would show very clearly and it would be safe to replace it to save trouble later. But unless it can be confirmed bad they're looking at the likeliest candidate.
