VW passat front end help Sign In

A little different than most work at the gm dealer....They pulled in a 2000 6cyl vw passat w/ 160k on it, it had been drivin into a ditch and had a terrible noise. Well after driving and diag came up with the f wheel bearing bad, doubtful that it was because of the ditch but oh well, better than warranty work! blah blah blah.

Anyways, I have the lf apart, by apart I mean all of the bolts and nuts holding control arms, tie rod ends, etcs are off, brakes off, hub off. I seriously beat it for 45 min and CAN NOT get the lower control arm joint out of the knucke (at least I think it is the lower control arm, hooks to cradle, bolt comes up from the bottom, to the right and slightly under the cv shaft)

I was wondering if I'm missing something as far as to why I can not get that thing off, any help would be great, thanks.

They use a tool to push it out but it looks like a normal, tapered round shaft.

The wonderful part is I bought that tool about a year ago, and it's sat ever since, looks like it's time for it to shine!

Also, the bolt that holds the hub on (17mm allen head) was TIGHT I had to get the truck shop guys 1200 foot pound 3/4 in impact to get it loose, and it still hardly went. Would you imagine that would have anything to do with it? I haven't got around to checking specs because I haven't got that far, but jesus, I think my cornwell impact is rated at 700 in reverse.

I'm not getting a great mental picture of this but some of those VW are a total PITA....If everything is loose & it's just a matter of getting it off the joint, try pulling on the knuckle to get it all the way to the stop of one turn. I've found that really helps to get some of this stuff off....
