VW remote key problem Sign In

When I bought my 2002 VW GTI I thought my car keys was pretty cool. Then the little attachment on both of them necessary to hook it on a keychain broke off both of them. Needless to say it was quite annoying to carry a key around separately in your pocket, and I ended up losing one of them. Mad

Anyway I drilled a small hole through the remaining key case and ran some wire through it in order to attach it to a key chain (without hitting any of the innards), The problem now is that I have to be real close to the car in order for the key to actually unlock the door remotely. Is there something in the car that would maybe be responsible (a transmitting receiver maybe) for this or is it definitely the key only. The thing is the keys are like $200 and I really don't want to get a new one unless I have to.

I have to change the batteries in the key case quite often. Much more often than I normally remember having to change key batteries....

I don't know how these gadgets work; just thought that maybe reduced power may cause the problem. Hope you get a good answer!
