Hey folks, what do you think? No previous problems. 1998 Chevy Suburban 1500 2x4, 5.7 vortec, ('R' on vin) AT., 136,000 miles. With little/no warning, driving about 70mph the 'check engine' light comes on, no change in performance, about 10 miles later she starts running a little rough (almost like she wanted to shift into OD but was already there, so no increase in rpm's). Then within a mile the 'check gauges' light comes on and by the time I could get off the road, the temp gauge jumps quickly to max and she starts losing power fast. Pulled over, shut her off on the last gasp. The coolant res. was completely empty (didn't dare open radiator), and checking the dipstick showed the oil/collant mixture was just about to overflow the dipstick tube. After the 56 mile tow home I drained the crankcase of nastiness and began research. Used 5.7 vortec is about $1000.00 and new heads are kind of high, too. It is a great vehicle otherwise. Any and most thoughts are welcome. I will likely do any/all work myself. Might be a good excuse to buy a new tool or two.
