Water temp gauge Sign In

I have a 05 Pontiac Montana van an my gauge goes up to half way in the span on 5 mins an have seen it go up two bars after that within the hr. If I run the heat it comes down two bars down from the halfway mark both heat an AC work an I can hear the fan come on is this just a simple low on coolant...if so do I have to put antifreeze or can unite water as I've been told

Use a 50/50 mix only of antifreeze coolant to top off but the problem is that it's low for a reason as it shouldn't be if you do find it low.
Since running heater also takes heat away from engine coolant (some) and then you get what you think is the normal for this it might be either low or radiator or fans not up to par? Many electric fans allow for temps to rise and fall some but not in a danger area. You seemed to know what a "low coolant" warning was and that warning is nice but means find and fix the leak.
Leaks not found thru pressure testing can be nasty on just what to blame up to intake and head gaskets can be elusive,

Turning the heat on may also be activating the AC compressor which will automatically turn the cooling fan on. Without AC the fan is programmed to come on much higher than what the thermostat is set to so that could be what you are seeing. As long as it never goes into the red zone, you don't have an issue.
